Freshman McCarthy Making Big Statement
With the start of the 2013 college baseball season under way Freshman Joe McCarthy is making a big statement at UVA. Joe a former Baseball U player was a member of the team that finished 3rd at the Perfect Game WWBA 17U National Championships in Georgia. McCarthy who is 6’3 and weighs 225 was a three sport star in high school is a perfect example of if you are willing to change as the game progresses to a higher level the sky is the limit. In the summer of 2011 McCarthy started the Baseball U road trip at UVA. During batting practice at UVA he made a few adjustments in his hand and elbow placement and went out in game 1 and went 3-4 with a double and a triple and continued to impress at the event. Joe left with an offer to attend UVA and accepted one week later. This past fall he started his freshman year at UVA and continued his development as a player and that hard work has earned him a spot in the starting lineup and in one local blog the nickname “Shrek”. In his first 4 games of the season he has reached base 12 times with 7 walks and 5 hits while scoring 4 runs and driving in 5. His understanding of the game and patience at the plate should keep him in the starting lineup that is loaded with young talent. McCarthy’s younger brother who already runs a 6.5 and is looking to shatter all Joe’s football records at Scranton High School will be playing with Baseball U this summer. Starting as a freshman is a tough accomplishment at any level let alone the ACC. We wish Joe all the best in his 2013 campaign.
